Most leafy greens have a refrigerator shelf life of 4-5 days.
3. Buy your produce first. It is the most important food. If you are on a budget, shopping for produce will maximize your dollar as you will avoid junk food while you have a cart full of produce.
4. Wash leafy greens by separating the leaves. Rinse well in order to remove pesticides.
5. Keep your refrigerator well stocked with fresh vegetables. This way you will always have what you need for a delicious salad.
6. While shopping, ask, "How will this go with a salad." Try to consider everything as something that will go into a salad or alongside it.
7. Eat a variety of foods in a rainbow of colors.
8. If using salt, use Real Salt or Sea Salt.
9. Eat breakfast: You need to ingest food within 30 minutes of waking up.
10. Eat 4-6 small meals throughout the day. It will keep your metabolism going.
11. Eat last meal of the day before 6 pm.
12. Go to bed early and get at least 8 hours of sleep. Don’t sleep with pets in the bed
and don’t watch anxiety-inducing TV shows before going to sleep.
13. Exercise — according to Dr. Boggs’ recommendations
14. Learn to deal positively with stress.
15. Listen to the body. The body will tell you what it needs and what it doesn’t need.
16. Become educated on how the body works.
17. Live a positive, happy, healthy life.
18. Eat twice as many veggies as fruits
19. No processed foods! If its wrapped in plastic or boxed up by a big company with
flashy words on the cover….. think twice
20. No MSG, and NO CHEMICALS!

Do You Suffer With Thyroid Symptoms?

Attention Thyroid Sufferers: If you have been diagnosed with a thyroid disorder, or if you have any symptoms of thyroid malfunction, then you must attend this free workshop.

Some of the topics to be covered:
1. Why do you still have thyroid symptoms when your lab values are normal?
2. Why thyroid tests that are normally ordered by your primary doctor DO NOT give a complete, accurate picture of how your thyroid is functioning
3. The various patterns of thyroid dysfunction (There are more patterns than just hypo- and hyper- thyroid!)
4. How an autoimmune disorder may be killing your thyroid without you even knowing about it
5. How we can easily detect your pattern of thyroid malfunction and support it naturally

This workshop will be held on Monday, October 17th at Boggs Chiropractic Center at 1808 Harper Road in Beckley, starting at 6:30 pm. font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;">Obesity is a major problem in our country. According to the CDC, Colorado is the only state in the U.S. with an obesity rate under 20%. Thirty three states have a rate greater than 25%, and nine have an obesity rate over 30%.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; That might just be the case, according to a study in the Archives of Surgery. This study found that:

“The bands eroded in almost 1 in 3 patients. Sixty percent had undergone additional surgery, including 17 percent who went on to have gastric bypass.”

The researchers went on to state that the lap band “appears to result in relatively poor long term outcomes.”

Even more disturbing are the comments from the lead Doctor in the study. Dr. Jacques Himpens of The European School of Laparoscopic Surgery and St. Pierre Hospital in Brussels stated that “the results are worse than we expected.” He also warned patients to be aware of the signs of band erosion and infection.

So, here is another example of a surgical alternative being extremely dangerous. This begs the question….what are the other options?

Well, fortunately, obesity is a disease of lifestyle and choice. Ouch. I know that sounds harsh. But, the fact of the matter is that obesity can only be controlled by making PERMANENT lifestyle changes. This means changes in the way you eat, even the way you look at food, and making a conscious decision to make exercise a priority in your life. This might seem like a tough task, but consider the alternative: Sickness and even death.

Losing weight and getting healthy isn’t easy. Consider that if you are overweight, it took years to get that way, and you can’t reverse it overnight.

In my clinic, I take what is essentially a “3-pronged” approach to helping patients lose weight. This involves detoxification, diet and exercise. By diet, I don’t mean “fad” dieting. I am talking about teaching a patient how to eat right for the rest of their life.

If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired because of your weight, please contact me through my website at www.boggschiro.com.

In Health,

Dr. Daniel Boggs

"Are You Ready To Lose Weight And Keep It Off?"

Are you sick of being overweight? One important point to keep in mind when trying to eat healthy is that variety is very important. So, I want to give you a list of foods that you probably don’t normally eat, that will give you some variety and a nutritional boost.
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; Adding healthy doses of berries to your diet will provide support for your arteries, mental function, decrease inflammation and support healthy vision. Again, buy organic whenever possible and always rinse your berries well because they retain pesticide residue.

4. Fermented foods. The human body needs “good” bacteria (probiotics) to have healthy gut function. Look for foods like yogurt, miso and sauerkraut to support your body’s normal bacteria colonies.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; Cruciferous vegetables. Broccoli, radishes, brussel sprouts and cabbage have been shown to lower the incidence of some cancers and aid in the body’s detoxification processes.

7. Organic figs. Figs are high in fiber, potassium and manganese. They support heart health and are great for weight management programs.
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; Fatty fish. Cold water fish like salmon and sardines contain high concentrations of health omega-3 fatty acids. Be sure to research where your fish originate from, as some fish will contain high levels of mercury if they are not raised properly.
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; Just….something different. Variety is important. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut, especially if you are counting calories. Try substituting a different fruit or vegetable in one of your normal dishes. Another hint is to buy fruits and vegetables that are different colors. Whatever you can do to add variety to your diet will help assure that you are getting the proper array of vitamins and minerals.

I hope you find these tips helpful. As always, “be well”.

Dr. Daniel Boggs

www.boggschiro.com

Combating The Effects of Toxicity On Your Health

One major influence over our health is something that is often overlooked. I’m referring to the amount of toxins that we are exposed to on a daily basis. This is called our “toxic load”. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Human Monitoring Program studied human exposure to toxic substances. The EPA Agency studies concluded that all humans have chemicals (toxins) stored in the adipose (fat) tissue. Chemicals such as, PCBs, xylene, styrene, dioxins and pesticides were found, as well as many others.

The bottom line is this: we are all carrying toxins in our bodies, and these toxins are dangerous. Most people simply aren’t informed about the toxins they are exposed to and why they are bad. So, I want to give you a little information that will help you decrease your toxic load.

But first, why is this even important? According to the National Cancer Institute’s 2005 – 2007 survey, there is a 40.77 percent lifetime risk of being diagnosed with cancer. The lifetime risk of being diagnosed with cancer in the 1975 – 1977 survey was about 33 percent. Cancer is one of the 3 leading causes of death in America. So, it’s important that you do whatever you can to help swing the percentages more toward your favor.

Toxins cause a wide array of problems in addition to cancer. Chemical compounds found in your food, air and water build up in your body. The accumulation of these compounds can lead to a wide variety of metabolic dysfunctions. It can even cause outright disease states.

The body systems that are most commonly affected by these toxic compounds are the immune system, the neurological system and the endocrine system. Some examples of disease states associated with toxicity include: immune dysfunction, autoimmunity, asthma, allergies, cancer, mental deficit, mood changes, neurological disease, libido/sexual problems, reproductive dysfunction and blood sugar irregularities.

The toxins in your body come from a wide variety of sources. These sources include environmental exposure such as: the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink, and medications. Internal (or “endogenous”) sources include: the products produced by digestion, energy metabolism, tissue regeneration, end products from the metabolism of hormones, bacterial by-products and other complex molecules.

So, what can you do to help decrease your toxic load, and improve your body’s ability to detoxify?

First, I think it will be beneficial to identify some sources of toxins. These would include:

1. Infectious organisms – bacteria, viruses, yeast, parasites

2. Allergens - food, mold, dust, pollen

3. Medications

4. Heavy metals – lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, aluminum

5. Metabolic by-products - nitrogen, bile, urea, ammonium, bacteria by-products

6. Anti-nutrients – high fructose corn syrup, trans-fatty acids, alcohol, processed foods

7. Stress – toxic emotions

8. Water, air, and other environmental sources

As you can see, it is easy for us to be exposed to toxins without even realizing it. Fortunately, we do have mechanisms within our body to combat toxicity. The major systems for detoxification within our body include the liver and gallbladder, kidneys, GI system, skin, lungs, lymphatic system and the circulatory system. It is important to support these systems and to keep the body healthy so that these systems can do their job. The functions of these systems are used to prevent toxin entry and to modify toxins for removal. Proper nutrition plays a key role in the management of toxins. Patients with nutrient deficiencies have reduced toxicant clearance. Dietary habits also influence the detoxification. For example, low protein diets will decrease clearance of toxicants.

My goal for this article is to give you some basic steps to reduce your toxic load. This is basically done through nutrition and through some general housekeeping tips. I will discuss nutrition later, but today, I want to give you some tips that you can implement immediately to help reduce your toxic exposure.

Steps to Reduce Toxic Exposure and Load:

1. Do not wear shoes indoors. You will track external toxins into your house from your shoes. Check them at the door.

2. Replace the furnace filters every 6 weeks with a high quality pleated filter rated at MERV 7-9 (The higher the MERV-minimum efficiency reporting value- rating, the fewer dust particles and other airborne contaminants can pass through)Most hospitals use a 9-10.

3. Have dry-cleaning air out in the garage or car trunk for a week before bringing it into the house

4. Do not smoke indoors. (How about not smoking at all? Really, people.)

5. Consider replacing carpet with tile or stone flooring

6. Use non-scented laundry detergent and fabric softener

7. Consider using an air purifier system. Make sure that the system is able to clean the entire air room every 20 to 30 minute. What if one person died every 3 minutes from texting while driving? What if one person died every 3 minutes from a firearm at home? Don’t you think there would be a national campaign to stamp out such a practice? However, this particular practice receives no scrutiny, and the public doesn’t even seem to notice or care.

Citing a survey from the inspector general of the Department of Health and Human Services, the USA Today piece questioned the public’s “blasé’” reaction to the fact that an estimated 180,000 patient die every year from medical “adverse events”. That’s 493 deaths per day, 20 deaths per hour, and one death every 3 minutes. What’s even more concerning is that the HHS survey estimated that 80,000 of these deaths could be prevented. Some examples cited were letting infections develop, giving the patient the wrong medication or giving an excess dose of the right drug.

If 500 people per day died from not wearing seatbelts, there would be national uproar and legislative action passed to force people to wear seatbelts. Locally, one person was injured by a motorist who drove through a red light, and the state issued a “Target Red” campaign to remind drivers to stop at red lights.

So, why is there no consumer outrage over medical care?

The numbers don’t lie. Let’s put this into perspective. A recent study in the medical journal SPINE revealed that patients who are treated by chiropractic adjustments have no more of a risk to have a stroke than they would if they were to go to their medical doctor for a routine visit. The “risk” associated with chiropractic neck adjustments is as low as 1 in 5,000,000 manipulations performed. However, a group in Connecticut tried to get chiropractic adjustments outlawed based upon these numbers.

To further put this into perspective, the U.S. military death toll in Iraq from 2003-2009 is somewhere around 4,300 deaths. That means that 250 times more people de every day from medical errors than soldiers in Iraq. Yet, people are outraged when they hear of a soldier dying in combat. (I‘m not minimizing the sacrifices that our soldiers make for our country. I’m just using this as an illustration).

Firearm deaths n the US from the years 2000-2007 totaled 240,997. That makes the number of deaths from guns about 20% of that caused by medicine. But, we have nationwide campaigns to stamp out gun use.

There is no national campaign for “Target Hospitals” or “Guns don’t kill people, medicine does.”

So, what is the average person to do? First of all, there is absolutely NO REASON for any person to be ignorant of the options surrounding their health. You are reading this article because you have internet access. Start using the internet to become educated about your health, instead of relying on television commercials urging you to ask your doctor about the latest medication. Honestly, are you really going to let a “dancing mucous” or an animated bumblebee educate you about your health? Take some responsibility! There is NOBODY that will care about your body more than you do. No doctor, hospital, minister, family member will be able to take care of YOU more than you are willing to take care of yourself.

You need to get out your brown bag, see what medications you are on, and start looking for alternatives. Get off your duff and start exercising. Stop eating garbage and fuel your body properly.

I’m tired of seeing people with so much potential losing all of their vitality to illness. I’m tired of seeing 30 year old driving motorized carts in Wal-Mart.

The bottom line is this: We all need to be better stewards with our health. If you decide to put your health in someone else’s hands, you might just become a statistic.

Dr. Daniel Boggs' Health Blog: Death By Numbers: Gambling With Your Health

Dr. Daniel Boggs' Health Blog: Death By Numbers: Gambling With Your Health: "Where is the outrage? I just wanted to pass along a couple of natural remedies to help you if you ever suffer from kidney stones.

The first, and preferred method is to make the following concoction and drink it throughout the day:
1) Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar (about a shot glass full)
2) 20 ounces of water
3) Honey (to taste)

The second method works but I have a hard time recommending that you drink this much Coke. But, if you are suffering, drinking it for one day isn't such a bad thing. So, this is what you do:

Buy a case of Coke and some asparagus. Drink about half a can of Coke (regular, not diet, and not Pepsi) every half hour. Once you get through 5 or 6 Cokes, puree about 4 ounces of asparagus mixed with water and drink it.

I know these both sound a little off the wall, but it works. Of course, my disclaimer is that consult with a doctor before attempting any time of remedy for any problem, including stones.

Consciencious Cleaning: Resources for Organic Grooming Products

Aubrey Organics (soap): aubrey-organics.com
Certain Dri (antiperspirant): mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;">Another valuable calculation we will use is the Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI is calculated from a person's weight and height. It is a fairly reliable indicator of body fatness for most people, but it does not measure body fat directly. The gold standards for calculating body fat are methods such as underwater weighting and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. However, research as shown BMI to be an acceptable and accurate way of measuring body fat.

BMI is a screening too only, not a diagnostic tool. For example, a person may have a high BMI. However, to determine if excess weight is a health risk, a healthcare provider would need to perform further assessments like skin fold thickness measurements, evaluations of diet, physical activity, family history, and other appropriate health screenings.

To caclulate BMI, the following method is used:

Formula: weight (pounds) / [height (in)]2 x 703

(divide weight in pounds (lbs) by height in inches (in) squared and multiplying by a conversion factor of 703.)

For example: Weight = 150 lbs, Height = 5'5" (65")
Calculation: [150 ÷ (65)2] x 703

                     [150 ÷ 4225] x 703

                     = 24.96

There is a strong correlation between the BMI number and body fatness; however the correlation varies by sex, race, and age. Also, highly trained athletes have a higher BMI because they have a lot more muscle than the average person.

It is also important to remember that BMI is only one factor related to risk for disease. Two other important predictors are:

<span lang="EN" style="color: black; The individual's waist circumference (because abdominal fat is a predictor of risk for obesity-related diseases).
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; I'm not necessarily going to discuss meal plans and specific foods. Intead, I am going to give you some basic information on how to plan your meals in terms of how many calories you should consume, what food groups to choose from, etc. So let's get started....

How much should you eat?

In order to decide how much you need to eat to fuel your body, we need to determine your basal metabolic rate, or BMR. Your BMR is the minimum amount of calories required to sustain the body’s functions and processes, when the body is at rest. Your BMR is responsible for burning up to 70% of the total calories you use during the day. Essentially, your BMR is the amount of energy your body needs just to function. Every function of your body requires calories/energy for fuel. Functions such as breathing, maintaining your body temperature, and breathing all require energy. Obviously, you will burn more calories on top of what is used for your BMR depending on various factors.
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; This is why it is counter-produce to excessively restrict calories in order to lose weight.
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpLast" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in; Exercise: exercise not only influences body weight by burning calories, it also raises your BMR. Exercise causes you to have more lean tissue and muscle so that you burn more calories when at rest

There are also some short term and transient factors that will affect your BMR. High fevers, stress and temperature increase will increase your BMR.

How to calculate your BMR

The first step in designing a personal nutrition plan is to calculate your BMR so that you know how many calories you will burn per day at rest. We need to know what your “total daily energy expenditure (TDEE)” is. TDEE is the amount of calories your body expends per day, including all activities. (BMR is how many calories, your body burns at rest. TDEE is the TOTAL of calories burned factoring in all activity).

A quick and easy way to determine calorie needs is to use total current body weight times a multiplier.

For fat loss = you will need 12-13 calories per pound of body weight

To maintaine your current status (TDEE) = consume 15-16 calories per pound of bodyweight

For weight gain = consume 18-19 calories per pound of bodyweight

This is an easy method to estimate caloric needs, but there are drawbacks to this method, mainly that it doesn't take into account activity levels or body composition.

Highly active individuals will require more calories than this formula indicates. In addition, the more lean body mass one has, the higher the TDEE will be. Because body fat levels are not accounted for, this formula may greatly overestimate the caloric needs if someone is extremely overfat. For example, a lightly active 50 year old woman who weighs 235 pounds and has 34% body fat will not lose weight on 3000 calories per day (235 X 13 as per the "quick" formula for fat loss).

A commonly used formula to figure out BMR is using the Harris-Benedict principle. This formula can be a bit more accurate, and this is the formula that I recommend you use:

Women: 655 + (4.3 x your weight in pounds) + (4.7 x your height in inches) – (4.7 x your age in years)

Men: 66 + (6.3 x weight in pounds) + (12.9 x height in inches) – (6.8 x age in years)

For example: To figure the BMR for a 5’ 4”, 150 pound, 30 year old woman: 655 +(4.3x 150) + (4.7 x 64) – (4.7 x 30) which equals to 1459

This equation will be very accurate for most people, except for those who are either very muscular or very over-fat.

So, at this point, go ahead and figure out your BMR. You should write it down for reference, as this will be your starting point in figuring out your meal plans.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; Some people only experience pain in one part of their head or behind their eyes, some people experience a pounding sensation inside their whole head, and some people even experience nausea, while others do not. The pain itself may be dull or sharp and may last for anywhere from a few minutes to a few days. Fortunately, very few headaches have serious underlying causes, but those that do require urgent medical attention.
Although headaches can be due to a wide variety of causes, such as drug reactions, temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), tightness in the neck muscles, low blood sugar, high blood pressure, stress and fatigue, the majority of recurrent headaches are of two types: tension headaches (also called cervicogenic headaches) and migraine headaches. There is a third, less common, type of headaches called a cluster headache that is a cousin to the migraine. Let’s start out by taking a look at each of these three types of headaches.

Tension Headaches
Tension type headaches are the most common, affecting upwards of 75% of all headache sufferers. Most people describe a tension headache as a constant dull, achy feeling either on one side or both sides of the head, often described as a feeling of a tight band or dull ache around the head or behind the eyes. These headaches usually begin slowly and gradually and can last for minutes or days, and tend to begin in the middle or toward the end of the day. Tension headaches are often the result of stress or bad posture, which stresses the spine and muscles in the upper back and neck.
Tension headaches, or stress headaches, can last from 30 minutes to several days. In some cases, chronic tension headaches may persist for many months. Although the pain can at times be severe, tension headaches are usually not associated with other symptoms, such as nausea, throbbing or vomiting.
The most common cause of tension headaches is subluxations in the upper back and neck, especially the upper neck, usually in combination with active trigger points. When the top cervical vertebrae lose their normal motion or position, a small muscle called the rectus capitis posterior minor (RCPM) muscle goes into spasm. The problem is that this small muscle has a tendon which slips between the upper neck and the base of the skull and attaches to a thin pain-sensitive tissue called the dura mater that covers the brain. Although the brain itself has no feeling, the dura mater is very pain-sensitive. Consequently, when the RCPM muscle goes into spasm and its tendon tugs at the dura mater, a headache occurs. People who hold desk jobs will tend to suffer from headaches for this reason.
Another cause of tension type headaches comes from referred pain from trigger points in the Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) or levator muscle on the side of the neck. These are much more common in people who suffer a whiplash injury due to the muscle damage in the neck region.

Migraine Headaches
Each year, about 25 million people in the U.S. experience migraine headaches, and about 75% are women. Migraines are intense and throbbing headaches that are often associated with nausea and sensitivity to light or noise. They can last from as little as a few hours to as long as a few days. Many of those who suffer from migraines experience visual symptoms called an "aura" just prior to an attack that is often described as seeing flashing lights or that everything takes on a dream-like appearance.
Migraine sufferers usually have their first attack before age 30 and they tend to run in families, supporting the notion that there is a genetic component to them. Some people have attacks several times a month; others have less than one a year. Most people find that migraine attacks occur less frequently and become less severe as they get older.
Migraine headaches are caused by a constriction of the blood vessels in the brain, followed by a dilation of blood vessels. During the constriction of the blood vessels there is a decrease in blood flow, which is what leads to the visual symptoms that many people experience. Even in people who don’t experience the classic migraine aura, most of them can tell that an attack is immanent. Once the blood vessels dilate, there is a rapid increase in blood pressure inside the head. It is this increased pressure that leads to the pounding headache. Each time the heart beats it sends another shock wave through the carotid arteries in the neck up into the brain.
There are many theories about why the blood vessels constrict in the first place, but no one knows for sure. What we do know is that there are a number of things that can trigger migraines, such as lack of sleep, stress, flickering lights, strong odors, changing weather patterns and several foods; especially foods that are high in an amino acid called ‘tyramine.’You can reduce the likelihood of migraine headaches by making some lifestyle changes.

Cluster Headaches
Cluster headaches are typically very short in duration, excruciating headaches, usually felt on one side of the head behind the eyes. Cluster headaches affect about 1 million people in the United States and, unlike migraines, are much more common in men. This is the only type of headache that tends to occur at night. The reason that they are called ‘cluster’ headaches is that they tend to occur one to four times per day over a period of several days. After one cluster of headaches is over, it may be months or even years, before they occur again. Like migraines, cluster headaches are likely to be related to a dilation of the blood vessels in the brain, causing a localized increase in pressure.

Chiropractic Care for Headaches
Numerous research studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments are very effective for treating tension headaches, especially headaches that originate in the neck.
A report released in 2001 by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that "spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than commonly prescribed medications." These findings support an earlier study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics that found spinal manipulative therapy to be very effective for treating tension headaches. This study also found that those who stopped chiropractic treatment after four weeks continued to experience a sustained benefit in contrast to those patients who received pain medication.
Each individual’s case is different and requires a thorough evaluation before a proper course of chiropractic care can be determined. However, in most cases of tension headaches, significant improvement is accomplished through manipulation of the upper two cervical vertebrae, coupled with adjustments to the junction between the cervical and thoracic spine. This is also helpful in most cases of migraine headaches, as long as food and lifestyle triggers are avoided as well.

Headache Trigger Points
Trigger point therapy for headaches tends to involve four muscles: the Splenius muscles, the Suboccipitals, the Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and the Trapezius. The Splenius muscles are comprised of two individual muscles – the Splenius Capitis and the Splenius Cervicis. Both of these muscles run from the upper back to either the base of the skull (splenius capitis) or the upper cervical vertebrae (splenius cervicis). Trigger points in the Splenius muscles are a common cause of headache pain that travels through the head to the back of the eye, as well as to the top of the head.
The Suboccipitals are actually a group of four small muscles that are responsible for maintaining the proper movement and positioning between the first cervical vertebra and the base of the skull. Trigger points in these muscles will cause pain that feels like it’s inside the head, extending from the back of the head to the eye and forehead. Often times it will feel like the whole side of the head hurts, a pain pattern similar to that experienced with a migraine.
The Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle runs from the base of the skull, just behind the ear, down the side of the neck to attach to the top of the sternum (breastbone). Although most people are not aware of the SCM trigger points, their effects are widespread, including referred pain, balance problems and visual disturbances. Referred pain patterns tend to be deep eye pain, headaches over the eye and can even cause earaches. Another unusual characteristic of SCM trigger points is that they can cause dizziness, nausea and unbalance.
The trapezius muscle is the very large, flat muscle in the upper and mid back. A common trigger point located in the very top of the Trapezius muscle refers pain to the temple and back of the head and is sometimes responsible for headache pain. This trigger point is capable of producing satellite trigger points in the muscles in the temple or jaw, which can lead to jaw or tooth pain.

Avoid Headache Triggers

Stress may be a trigger, but certain foods, odors, menstrual periods, and changes in weather are among many factors that may also trigger headache.

Emotional factors such as depression, anxiety, frustration, letdown, and even pleasant excitement may be associated with developing a headache.

Keeping a headache diary will help you determine whether factors such as food, change in weather, and/or mood have any relationship to your headache pattern.

Repeated exposure to nitrite compounds can result in a dull, pounding headache that may be accompanied by a flushed face. Nitrite, which dilates blood vessels, is found in such products as heart medicine and dynamite, but is also used as a chemical to preserve meat. Hot dogs and other processed meats containing sodium nitrite can cause headaches.

Eating foods prepared with monosodium glutamate (MSG) can result in headache. Soy sauce, meat tenderizer, and a variety of packaged foods contain this chemical which is touted as a flavor enhancer.

Headache can also result from exposure to poisons, even common household varieties like insecticides, carbon tetrachloride, and lead. Children who ingest flakes of lead paint may develop headaches. So may anyone who has contact with lead batteries or lead-glazed pottery.

Foods that are high in the amino acid tyramine should also be avoided, such as ripened cheeses (cheddar, brie), chocolate, as well as any food pickled or fermented foods.

Reference: http://www.boggschiro.com/, Chiromatrix
Dr.Daniel Boggs

The Dangers of Drinking Cow's Milk

For some time, I have been instructing my patients NOT to drink cow’s mild. Let me start off by saying that in it’s purest form, cow’s milk is not generally bad. Although, personally, I stick to “nut milk” like almond mild or even rice milk. It doesn’t quite taste the same, but it’s an acquired taste and after a few weeks you won’t miss cow’s milk at all….but I digress….

Again, in it’s pure form, cow’s milk is probably not dangerous. However, cow’s milk as purchases in grocery stores is loaded with antibiotics, hormones a genetically modified substances that are not good for the human body. Some of these constituents are known to be bad. For instance, bovine growth hormone is linked to breast, prostate and colon cancer. This hormone is injected into cows to make them produce more milk

On a more, well, disgusting level….milk contains pus. The national averages show at least 322 million cell-counts of pus per glass of milk.] This is well-above the human limit for pus-intake, and has been directly linked to paratuberculosis bacteria, and Chron’s disease. The pus comes from infected udders on the cows.

There is also concern about cows’ milk triggering diabetes. Research implicates a connection with cow’s insulin and/or a bovine milk protein called glycodelin and type 1 diabetes. Currently, a pilot study is underway sponsored by the National Institute of Health and Welfare in Finland to assess insulin-free cow milk formula in the prevention of type 1 diabetes associated with autoimmune disease. A recent article in the “Journal of Proteome Research” stated that studies show a relationship between cow protein and the risk of onset of type 1 diabetes

Small children are also at risk. Several studies of infant feeding show a causal relationship between time of formula containing cow protein and an increased risk of onset of type 1 diabetes.

So, in closing, my suggestion to you is to stop drinking cow’s milk and stick to nut milk, rice milk or hemp milk. If you insist on drinking milk, stick to the non-genetically modified, range fed, organic raw versions. The same goes with cheese. Choose organic versions. Sure, the organic milks and cheeses are more expensive, but considering the lifetime costs of diseases linked to milk like diabetes, Chron’s, etc., you will be making out in the end.

The Insider's Guide To Injuries Caused By Car Wrecks

Every day, thousands of Americans are involved in auto accidents receive what I believe to be inappropriate managment for their injuries. As a result, they either receive inappropriate care for their injuries or never get their injury diagnosed properly, which can lead to chronic and painful health problems.
Even if you were involved in a minor fender bender, studies have proven you could suffer from a severe injury that isn't easily noticeable. Research has shown that you can be severely injured and only feel a little or no pain after the accident. Your doctor can easily miss this and mistake your pain for something completely different. That doesn't mean you should skip the ER.

Injuries from motor vehicle accidents are often missed by "first line" practitioners, such as those at the emergency room. There are several reasons for this. First of all, the emergency room doctors and nurses are there to make sure you don't have a serious, life threatening injury. Related to a car wreck, their main concern is that you don't have something like a bone fracture, internal bleeded, laceration, and injuries of that sort. However, most injuries related to a car wreck are "soft tissue" injuries. Things like sprains, strains, vertebral misalignments and pinched nerves. These injuries are often not taken seriously by ER practitioners b/c they are not always immediately evident after the accident. There is a phenomenon called "delay onset muscle sorenss" which means that you will have more pain during the days AFTER the accident. In addition, many accident sufferers have pain that is masked by the adrenaline rush that occurs immediately after the accident. This is why car accident injuries are often called "hidden injuries".

"Hidden injuries" are sneaky, potentially debilitating, and will strike millions of Americans this year.

See, after any accident, it's advisable to visit the emergency room to make sure you don't suffer from any life-threatening injuries like broken bones, a punctured lung, or internal bleeding. This is what emergency room doctors specialize in.

But the problem is that as long as there's no immediate threat to your life, the emergency room physician is likely to send you along on your way with pain medication to mask the pain. And here's the problem with only taking pain medication after your accident: When you only take pain relief and/or anti-inflammatory medication, scar tissue and adhesions can form, limiting the proper motion needed for healthy nerve and blood flow. Scar tissue is also a sub-standard tissue that can turn into its own source of pain - causing a number of chronic pains, symptoms and syndromes. Some examples of the chronic problems your injury can turn into are migraine headaches, chronic pain and fibroymyalgia.

One of the reasons these injuries are missed is that most doctors don't have the training to detect soft tissue injuries...they over-rely on vital signs, x-rays, and the pain described by the patient. Soft tissue injuries are NOT visible on x-ray. Since many doctors can't detect your injury, they make the wrong diagnosis about what's wrong with you. So any treatments you get based on this diagnosis will do practically nothing for you!

The treatment of choice for medical doctors, like your family doctor, is to use drugs to cover up your symptoms (in your case, the biggest symptom is pain) so you don't feel injured anymore. This form of treatment only gives you the illusion that you're okay, when in fact you can be seriously injured.

If you were in a car wreck and have any of the following symptoms, you should be evaluated by your chiropractor:

<span style="color: black;
